Spirit Airlines is once again expanding its schedule in Puerto Rico
Introducing a new flight from Fort Myers to the island territory.
The budget-friendly airline recently inaugurated a route connecting San Juan and Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, marking the city’s inaugural service to Puerto Rico. This year-round flight, operating four times a week from Wednesdays to Saturdays, underscores Spirit’s commitment to providing affordable travel options. Celebrating three decades of service from Fort Myers, Spirit now boasts a total of 14 nonstop flights from the city.
The announcement of this new route closely follows the introduction of seasonal flights to Fort Myers from Charleston, Norfolk, and Richmond. John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines, expressed gratitude to Fort Myers for its ongoing support, stating, “RSW is a great, long-time partner of Spirit Airlines, and we’re thankful to the Fort Myers community for their continued support as we add the only nonstop service to SJU on our 30th anniversary.” Kirby highlighted the exciting opportunity this nonstop service creates to connect the two vibrant communities with reliable and convenient flights.
Fort Myers now joins the ranks of Spirit’s fifth city in Florida offering nonstop routes to Puerto Rico, joining Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa.
This development comes less than a year after Spirit’s major expansion from Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Hartford to Puerto Rico, which the airline identifies as its “top Caribbean destination.” In addition to its main hub at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Spirit serves other Puerto Rican cities, including Aguadilla and Ponce.
Looking ahead to 2024, Spirit anticipates a pivotal year as it continues to modernize its fleet with the delivery of two dozen Airbus A321neos, featuring wider seats throughout the cabin. The ongoing JetBlue-Spirit merger trial adds another layer of anticipation, with the fate of both airlines expected to be determined in the coming year.
